Freelancing

Freelancing: This topic was a part of yesterday's workshop. She enlightened our thoughts and gave us a lot of insights about freelancing. She began the talk with a story of her college days, and she questioned why it related to all of us, and she said it's because some things don't change and we can relate memories of college and the same mischievous things keep happening. Then we had another question: What do you think is something that's developed newly in the technological sector? And we all said Swiggy, Zomato, and so on. She talked about cryptocurrency, and she asked why we wouldn't have that. Then she went into the context of what freelancing is all about.

First and foremost, she spoke about freelancing and how it's evolving in today's world; she spoke about how change can bring opportunities. She asked a question, "Why freelancing?" and the answer is that freelancing has a flexibility of time; you can pick your own job by identifying your own interest, and she told this particular thing that is "Freelancing = Business." The only thing you need to know is your skill set about your life is something that is important for a freelancer.

Secondly, the industries for exploring as a freelancer: she listed a few industries where we can match them through our skill set to know which suits us the best. The industries are Education/Ed tech, corporate sector, NGO, social impact organization, digital marketing, journalism, English as a second language, media and entertainment, publishing, medical transcription, ghostwriting, academic writing, branding, and PR. These are the industries for exploring as a freelancer in a freelancing space.

Thirdly, she spoke about "where to find the clients." She explained to us her experience of how she found a client, and she gave us a few platforms to find clients: Network, LinkedIn, Platform, Cold Outreach,

Fourthly, she mentioned the types of freelancing work, which are tasks, profit, contract, and retainer. These are the types of works she mentioned, and she gave us the idea of works of this freelancing.

Adding on to the work, she also told us how to price our works. She mentioned that for tasks (cost per word or per page), types of projects (per project), contracts (per unit per month), and retainers (per month payment), this is how she gave us the pricing, and she instructed us to be sure about the pricing and fix the pricing and ask them to advance 50% of the amount before they start their work.

Finally, she had a fun activity where two people enacted the roles of freelancer and client, and she gave us knowledge on how to demand, how to fix a price, how to have a contract, and how to fix a time for their work, and that helped us to shape our knowledge better in the field of a freelancer. These are the key takeaways of the workshop that happened yesterday; hope you have found it useful. Meet you in the next blog.
